Diet culture - "Don't drink smoothies, they're full of sugar."
Me - "smoothies are delicious and they make me happy."
Diet culture equates your weight to your self worth. It tells us that thin people are the most healthy, the most strong and the most happy. We strive to get there and punish ourselves when we fuck up, which we undoubtedly do because no matter what anyone tells you, all diets restrict your eating.
I absolutely hate diet clubs. I've been there, got my weight down to a random number that I chose, and guess what? NOTHINGS DIFFERENT! What I will say, is that I do not hate dieters. I completely understand not feeling comfortable in your own skin but I'd also like to tell you all; you don't need to be on a diet to love yourself. This isn't some egotistical advice, I genuinely believe that we need to start judging ourselves on our actions and not our appearance. Do something that makes you feel good - run 5k - attend a protest - speak up for what you believe in! I promise you, it'll do far more for your self worth.
Diet culture is the reason that moving away from dieting and choosing to respect and work with your body, instead of constantly trying to change it, is so radical. This doesn't mean you should be unhealthy, it means you should move in a way that lifts your mood and eat what makes you feel good. You don't need to be on a diet to know what is good for your body. You don't need to be a size 8 to be healthy either.
Next time, when you're sat mulling over all the bits you hate, just ask yourself, "would you say that to your friend?"... So here's a little reminder to be kinder to yourself... oh, and drink the god damn smoothie if it makes you happy. 🍓
