Self Care? Self Love? What's it all about?

Writer: The Feminist FoodieThe Feminist Foodie

Self care is a total buzzword right now and I can't lie, I'm a huge fan. #SelfCareSunday #SelfCareDaily #SelfCareIsntSelfish I love it all... and not just because it gives me an excuse to have excessively indulgent baths or spend my entire salary in Neom...

This year I've realised the importance of self care. Until this year I'd never struggled with any form of mental health issue. On paper I have a pretty nice life. I adore my job, my friends, my boyfriend, my colleagues, my family, the list goes on... and that became the issue really. I burnt myself out. I worked, I went out with friends, I saw my family, went on city breaks, explored new places... but I never had down time.

Consciously practicing self care for the past few months has helped me in ways I never thought possible. To be in the present moment and not spend every second of the day planning the future (and I LOVE to plan). Self care can be anything. It’s the self-awareness that you need time for yourself to grow or develop in any way. This week my little self care was buying myself a new aromatherapy goodie form M&S. This little linen spray has been spritzed on my sofa blanket (because it's autumn now and who doesn't love a sofa blanket), it's so warming and natural... so getting cosy and breathing in the gorgeous spiced snuggly aroma is my September self care.

Now self love... self love is a work in progress for me.

Self love is not loving your body. Self love is being grateful and accepting of your physical and mental being. Now this isn't looking in the mirror and thinking 'oh there's the cellulite on my legs, today I'm going to try love you'... it's about being grateful for your legs that carry you to amazing places, about loving your brain for coming up with creative concepts, about not comparing yourself to anyone else and just being accepting of yourself. Self love is hard. It's even harder when you're over critical. My first step towards self love is to ditch the scales - I used to weigh myself daily and I'm currently on day 45 of NO SCALES. A small victory in itself.
